or..stick with a colour street pilot III
been around donkeys
well proven build quality
half the price now
bigger screen
firmware and software free upgrades still going strong for them
loads of spares and add on's about for them
ever tried using a touch screen with bike gloves on %$fan
been watching them on ebay going with loads of add on's for ?200 beer tokens
only downside i can see is the cost of the ram modules..but how many do you need ffs :dunno: i can get all of the UK in detail on my 128mb standard module..so unless your riding off round the world without access to a pc you dont need more modules IMO

I wish.......

I could find one at 200 beer tokens:B

There again, beer in London is about ?3.00 a pint. So therefore that is ?600

I have been trying to find a Streetpilot 3 for the last 6 months, and they are now going UP in price again... Missed one for ?275 then all the rest have gone for ?250-275 used, and ?300-?400 new......

If you see one Simon, let me know please...

Either that or Gyppo, get me one(nudge,nudge..wink,wink...LOL), and theres a drink in it for ya...LOL

Cheers,

Rolfy

Bet the owner of the little van was WELL pissed off..
Apart from water ingress there was little wrong with the motor until 1o tons of moron driven lorry fell on it !

Actually, thinking about it.. Perhaps he was pleased !
If he drove the car in the water he had bugger all to claim agin 'cept his own insurance.. but once that crane fell on it ...... !!! Nice one ! :p

Richard - I've not had a chance to try this route out yet. It does however sound like a problem with the 'Navteq' map data base. If this is the case then It's most unfortunate and understandably annoying that these errors exist in your general area.

When I get some time over this weekend I'll have a go with the routes you outlined with the Navteq (i.e. Mapsource) versions 4, 5 and 6 map data sets to see what happens.

I don't know if this will make you feel better (probably not!) but this is a section of a review from the States about the map data TomTom uses.

"Numerous errors in the map data are causing the unit to actually pose a danger to me while driving because they tell me to make illegal turns or go in the wrong direction, therefore I can no longer recommend the package. This is unfortunate because I truly love the hardware design and user interface. Should they update the map data and routing functions, I would gladly give the unit my highest recommendation, but until then I suggest you look elsewhere for a navigator."

The validity and accuracy of the map data that GPS manufacturers buy in is a problem for all of them. At work we run into similar problems sometimes with current OS and other data sets used for GIS and remote sensing.

If the problem is with the Navteq map sets, does that mean that ALL GPS's are affected, Garmin V, Streetpilot......??

Yes, the key thing however is how the unit firmware and software actually deals with the data error. The error response will vary across models and across whichever software version/patch is being used on the model. The main problem for software engineers is how to recognise that there is an error in the data in the first place. It?s the old adage of ?feed shit in and you get shit out?, but how do you know you have shit to begin with? Trying to develop algorithms to deal with this sort of thing is the ?holy-grail? of spatial coding.

It has to be pointed out that Garmin/Navteq are not the only ones to suffer from map data errors and resulting software errors. TomTom, who buy their map data in from TeleAtlas, also have problems. take a look at this from a couple of years ago - http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/tomtommia.php , they still come across problems and still release patches/map updates like all other GPS manufacturers.

Reet I managed to get hold of Garreth at garmin customer service and e-malled him a couple of runs over from Huntington to Peterborough encompassing the A1, where I have found most of the faults so far having spoken to him and subsequently pass it over to Garmin us they are doing some major number crunching. My main question is i have just spent ?340 quid on something I do not trust what are they going to do about it a recall may be????
