I'm left handed and despite the best efforts of school and the RAF Regt. I'm still "sinister".
They both tried their best to convert me but failed miserably. Primary school involved being regularly whacked on the back of the left hand with a ruler. My mum soon put a stop to that when she found out.
Unfortunately the RAF wouldn't accept her note excusing me, so I had to learn to do a fair few things the right handed way. But I resisted heroically....
It started early on in basic training when we were on the parade square doing drill. Dopey here forgot himself at one point and threw up a left handed salute during one practice.
Cue a tirade of abuse from the drill NCO's, culminating in yours truly doing half an hour of saluting drill while the rest of the flight legged it to the mess for scoff.
It didn't improve when we got on to the ranges. The SLR, the Gimpy and the 9 mil Browning could all be fired south paw, but fire an SMG left handed and there's a good chance you'll fill up the right hand sleeve of your combat jacket with hot brass. I did and out of sheer bloody mindedness persisted because the range staff said I wouldn't be able to hack it.
The LMG was another opportunity to display my left handed muppetry. The sights are offset to the left side, so to fire it prone you need to cant it 45 degrees to the right. Cue some of the most entertaining groupings ever seen by the range staff.
