Where does the term 'Pole position' originate from? I was quite surprised when I found out.

Is it something to do with the gee gees, where the best horse gets the inside line and therefore, in theory at least, the shortest run ??:dunno:

You are correct with the gee gees reference but nothing to do with racing.

Getting warmer if I thought it was something to do with the leading horse in a multi-horse carriage team?

Nothing to do with racing at all but you are closer with the carriage although it is not called a carriage in this instance.

Ok you're almost there, when it comes to feeding the dray horses whilst they are on their rounds they are fed with a nosebag the horses like to rest the bottom of the nosebag on the pole at the front of the dray so they can get the food easier. the horse that is first gets 'pole position'.
