Having been brought up in the bad old days when we had a coal fire in the living room, an electric fire in the front room (switched on at Christmas EVERY year!) no heating anywhere else; ice on the inside of the bedroom windows in the winter; an outside loo etc etc (cue 'Hovis' music)
is why we now over-heat OUR double-glazed, cavity wall insulated home and the boiler and radiators were fitted to double what they need be - they can always be turned down (or off) or we can open a window (or 3) if we're too hot -
but never again will I ever have to endure the misery of being TOO BLOODY COLD in my own home!!!!!!
I work in an unhealthily hot office which can't be properly ventilated as my boss doesn't like the windows open - he sits by the window you see, so he isn't as warm as the rest of us who don't! - and no, he won't move, we've tried that!!!! - and despite being diabetic, a smoker and a complete wimp, I very seldom get colds these days, because I have my flu jab every winter.
I once wondered if it really made any difference so one year (1985) I deliberately didn't have the jab and not only did I have a couple of colds - I also got FLU and landed up having a month off work!!!!!
I am told by some of my colleagues that their doctors have actually refused the flu jab to them as they are not in an 'at risk' category - I find this totally unbelievable - is it generally true?
