To start or not to start?

If your bike isn't used much in winter is it best to start her up and run up to op temp every week or so, or does the constant starting warming and cooling do any harm?

only emusifies the engine oil and forms condensation in the exhausts but apart from that fine

If its not going to be ridden for a short period (4/6/8 weeks) then make sure its put away sparling and lubed and ready to ride, trickle charge the battery and chock the front so both wheels (tyres) are off the floor.

You don't have to do anymore for short periods so get cleaning tomorrow morning :p

I got a little invention of my own. I had an old knackered motorcycle cover. So I cut big chunks out all over it leaving only the bits you don't want to be spraying water into electrickery, chain, sprokets etc. And now wid a bit 'o' gaffer tape I can blast away wiv me pressure washer.

Dunno why you go to all that trouble Zoffo.. well actually I do, cos I used to do the same kinda thing..
I just use the pressure washer on everything cept the chain.. If it buggers the wheel bearings a few miles early big deal , it might reduce their life down to 30 odd k instead of 35+K.. 20 quid and an hours work tops.. As for electrical stuff.. Anything that can withstand a semi tropical down pour consistantly ( I have a good email type friend in India ) can sure as hell hold off an assault with a pressure washer !

I originally felt as you do Zoffo, but whilst jobbing in the trade sorting out electronic problems for various shops and dealers, it came to my attention that EVERYONE just blasts away.. Since then I have done the same and so far, almost 5 years on, have suffered absolutely no ill-effects whatsoever :p

I am not for one minute suggesting that anyone else should do as I do, I am just reporting what I found out and have acted upon for the last 5 years ;p

sudden changes in body temperature, ie man warm and dry stood using karcher, suddenly cold and wet body immune system doesn't function right so does not have the power to tell the viruses to feck off, so the viruses take one look at Jaws soaking wet and think 'party time'
the reason there are so many snotty noses in winter is not because the weather is cold and damp, but because, people leave their centrally heated houses, to go into the cold, then get into their cars (still cold) when the car gets going a bit, turn on the heaters, pull up at their destination, get out into the cold again, then go into centrally heated offices or shops

Ahah ! Could this be why family Jaws has few colds ?
We do not have central heating, relying on a small wall mounted gas fir in the conservatory, a 'normal' gas fire ( that is rarely turned on ) in the living room, and another small wall mounted gas fire at the top of the stairs. ( sometimes set on lowest setting during colder nights but generally also off ).

Dunno why bit our house is warm as toast most of the time yet cool(ish) in the summer !

Having been brought up in the bad old days when we had a coal fire in the living room, an electric fire in the front room (switched on at Christmas EVERY year!) no heating anywhere else; ice on the inside of the bedroom windows in the winter; an outside loo etc etc (cue 'Hovis' music)

is why we now over-heat OUR double-glazed, cavity wall insulated home and the boiler and radiators were fitted to double what they need be - they can always be turned down (or off) or we can open a window (or 3) if we're too hot -

but never again will I ever have to endure the misery of being TOO BLOODY COLD in my own home!!!!!!

I work in an unhealthily hot office which can't be properly ventilated as my boss doesn't like the windows open - he sits by the window you see, so he isn't as warm as the rest of us who don't! - and no, he won't move, we've tried that!!!! - and despite being diabetic, a smoker and a complete wimp, I very seldom get colds these days, because I have my flu jab every winter.

I once wondered if it really made any difference so one year (1985) I deliberately didn't have the jab and not only did I have a couple of colds - I also got FLU and landed up having a month off work!!!!!

I am told by some of my colleagues that their doctors have actually refused the flu jab to them as they are not in an 'at risk' category - I find this totally unbelievable - is it generally true?

Just mention the words 'HSE' and 'Sick building Syndrome'. He's breaking the law!
You are also entitled to a work place risk assessment. You could fry his arse if you wanted to.

Jen, this part of Brum only offers the flu jab to those 'at risk'.
I am in that category too, but choose not to have it. I don`t generally get colds, my step brother works in a warehouse at subzero temps in the winter and claims not to get colds and stuff because the germs can`t incubate and breed. Being out on the bike a lot in the winter months, I kinda thought the same thing.
Slightly OT, sorry %$fan
