Speed camera/thing help

Riding home tonight see a thing on the left side of the road, flashing the speed at me, then on the other side of the road in the long grass hides a panda and two policemen. This thing is about 20 ft inside a 30mph.( the road was a 40 beforehand). I came around the bend am about 300ft away from thing (at 300ft it looks like a dustbin bag) and can not see the snipers in the grass, the thing flashes54mph i think, i slow down and as i am about 10ft from thing it flashes 31mph, it is at this point i can see the snipers.

Questions are:

WTF is the thing and am i going get nicked?????

Or is it a slow exercise????

Dunno.......maybe..................

Some regions will be "experimenting" with removing fixed speed camers and replacing them with signs that flash your speed up - especially if you are going faster then you should.
Maybe this is what you saw :dunno:

thank you.

there was no warning what so ever and the snipers were about 10ft before the box as i approached, leaning on the back of the panda facing the direction i was going.

I suspect that local yoofs may even use them as a game and see what their highest notified speed can be!

They tried 'em in my neck of the woods and that's exactly what happened Clive !!! We have a primary and junior school in the road that leads to our turning and the local 'Max Power car' boys used to tear up the street past the school to see how high they could get it to read.
The road is only about half a mile long (30mph limit) and the t*sser's were taking bets on whose car could get it to 99mph but still have time to brake for the roundabout at the end.

It didn't last long.....the council removed it and now we have a Gatso in it's place.

Here in Lincs they don't flash up your speed, just a reminder of the limit if you're breaking it, so they can't be used for amusement. They are moved around periodically so people don't get immunised from their effect. I read somewhere that they have been proved to be more effective than cameras for reducing speed so that can't be a bad thing.
Trouble is they don't raise any revenue to feed the burgeoning bureaucracy of the speed camera monster so they prolly won't catch on.
