Should I change Birds?

I've got a 97 carbed Bird - 17k miles, nice condition.

I was chatting to one of the guys in the local Honda dealers a while ago, and I said I'd only contemplate changing the Bird for a newer one - nothing else - it would have to be black (cue: abuse!), and I wasn't in any hurry cos I love my Bird.

He rang me today to say he's just got an 02 Bird in stock, 18k miles, nice condition, right colour, ?5495. Probably cost me about ?2k to change - maybe a bit more?

So should I do it? Would a newer model, be that much better than mine? What differences would I notice?

Any advice?

Was in same position, George whites have got an 02 plate with 25k on it, ?4300

you have to weigh up what you have done to ur current bike !

i would have to transfer private plate, cans, etc and as i have fitted new c & s, extras etc, so by the time you cost for all of that you could transform ur old un into a very special bike. and at 17k it aint really run in is it !

Clear as mud now innit ! :neenaw:

Should have said :xm - mine had 11500 on the clock when I bought it last June. I've done 5500 miles on it in 8 months

If I get out on it much more, it'll be taking me to the divorce court :B

Is their any chance you could get her indoors more into it (bikeing) thier is a lot of us 2 up in this club and we have a just as good time on the ride outs as the single riders and the Bird is a good bike for riding 2 up.
Just a thought sam.

I wouldn't bother m8.
I've got a '98 Bird with 36k on the clock and I wouldn't change it until a better Bird comes out, which there isn't at the moment.
I was in my local bike emporium at the weekend and the salesman there tried to persuade me to swap mine for a Busa cos 'it's a better bike than the Blackbird' yeah right !! Must be desperate for sales, said he would have a demo in March and I'm more than welcome for a test ride, but I just aint interested.
My Bird is exactly how I want it, had it since new so I know it aint been thrashed (if its possible!), all the extrra bits like paint jobbie, cans, etc, add my little touch so why the hell would I want a stock Busa instead !
Told him I would only ever be interested in swapping if a better Bird came out, seems like a recurring theme on here !!

Ask yourself this question - do I need to change it?.

If the answer is no, then dont, you'll just be wasting money. Spend the 2k on trick bits for your current bike.

I also have a 97 carbed bike, its done nearly 30K and is still as good as the day it came out of the box.

Am I changing it, no, theres no need. When its gets to be a shed I will, but I hope thats a long way off.

I have to ask this..

You have a bike that we know is good for in excess of 500,000 miles.
The engine is more powerful than the later ones.
It has a higher top speed.
It has better fuel economy when ridden at less than warp speed..

All in all it aint a bad bike !

So why change apart from change for change sake ?

Uless you have a titanium one of course, then I fully understand the quandry ! :p

I've got to agree with all the above, we have two birds one carb and one Injection and in the real world, on the road there is so little difference. If your bird is good keep it. The main difference that I find is when we go out together and I get the bikes out my wifes one with carbs can suffer with carb iceing if the weather is right for it but mine with Injection has no problems. I think hers might be a bit faster than mine and it uses less fuel. The only reason I'd change would be to get a black one.

The carbed ones use 10% less fuel.

Mines got 51k on it and still goes like stink...
No point changing as far as I can see.

I've a 97 carb with over 50k [82,000 kms] and it still goes well. Why change for the devil you don't know? I've had the bike since 98 [4k kms] and know it's history.

Plus changing screen, Scottoiler, luggage, alarm, exhausts etc is time consuming or would cost a fortune to replace new [all at once]. :xm

Apart from punctures, it's only let me down once when reg/rec took out the battery about 3 years ago. %$fan Even with those miles my bike's worth about ?3k and virtually zero depreciation now! :neenaw:

Stick with what you know perhaps that's not costing a fortune?

See, its all a matter of perspective and self worth..
It is human nature not to admit to a mistake unless we are cornered and have no choice Ian..

Well fortunately for you no one is going to put you in that position.. so whilst you know in your heart and head you bought the wrong colour, you will still ( quite rightly ) defend it to the last..
