Serious tyre help needed

I got a new rear 020 for me bike last week and a guy within me bike club said his son can fit it for me. So after a brief negociation a time and date was set.

I turned up with wheel and tyre as did me mate, (Two Avons for him), and this guys son sets to work. Managed to get me mates front avon on ok but couldnt get the rear one on. Blames the compressor and tries with mine. After some struggling there is a god almighty bang and a gouge has been removed from the side wall of my tyre.

Cut a long story short, there is a godalmighty row brewing over this, he wont replace the trye cos he'll be out of pocket, etc, etc. Then, in the argument he tells me that a dealer has seen the tyre and said its fine. Now, without a picture I cannot show you the damage but what I can do is discribe. The gouge is approx 3 inches long and is half to an inch above the rim and follows the contour of the rim. Most of the gouge is superficial but what bothers me is at the end of it, there is steel webbing exposed.

I have spoken to several experienced tyre fitters and discribed how the fitting was being done and it seems that his son, albeit trained by ATS was doing it wrong. He was trying to fit a tyre with the bead in place, not pushing the tyre down into the well.

Hopefully I will be collecting the tyre tonight and I'll try and get a picture posted but from what I have posted here, what say you? Should I get another opinion?

I wouldn't fit it.

He was doing it wrong, sounds like he didn't know what he was doing and you were advised by his father that he was up to the job.

If you get nowhere with the numpty, then take issue with the numpty's Dad at your club.

If you still get nowhere, bring Mr 4x2 out of hibernation........

tyres

If any of the steel of fabric carcass is showing then you would fail an MOT, get nicked plus points for damaged tyres so.....................
DONT FIT IT

I am certainly no expert, but in my opinion he has damaged your tyre and it is his responsibility to replace it. He says he will be out of pocket, but I say rather him than you.
He should be insured anyways, not that he would want to make a claim for one tyre.
Even if the tyre is still usable I wouldn't put up with it. Look at it this way, he could have scratched you fuel tank. The fuel tank will still work perfectly fine but you woudln't put up with that would ya.

Dont put up with any shit. Know your rights.

And if all else fails then :shooter: kidding of course.

Good luck

I spent 5 years working for ATS many years ago, so know a bit about it.

If he has damaged your tyre in any way, he is liable, to cut a gouge in the sidewall of a tyre exposing the plies has seriously weakened that tyre.

If a dealer has seen and said its fine, find out who the dealer was was and NEVER use him!!

There is an art to fitting tyres, yes the tyre should have been in the well (Thats what its there for) trying to fit any other way can and will damage the tyre, or the rim, esp in the case of alloy rims.

Fitted right the tyre will slide on the rim with very little effort, Christ I could change a lorry Supersingle tyre in under a minute, taking it off with 2 levers and refitting a new one with just my knees and bodyweight!!

Hope this helps a bit.

Threaten him with plod cos by inference he has said he is competent..
If that is the case and he is able to do the job the only explanation would be a deliberate act ! ( He cannot have it both ways you see )..

Criminal damage will see him with at the very least a few hours community service.. I bet he will cough for a new tyre mate..

Oh and could you post name and location please Bubba.. Def do not need anyone falling foul of the idiot !

Wolfie

Is a lunp
feck him, get yer money back for the tyre as well and clout him or just beat him to a pulp insert compressor up his arse and turn on for full pressure then watch him whizz away like a large ballon.

Ahh! But....

I bet he was doing it cheap though.................

Peanuts & Monkey I reckon.....

Not many competent businesses are going to charge less than a tenner a wheel to change bike tyres, (supplied loose) balance them and dispose of the old carcasses.

Thanks for the replies peeps. There could be a complication to this that I forgot to mention. He is retired plod with a LOT of contacts. Saying that he is now one of these bike medics too but I'm not sure wether this was carried out under their banner.

I'm all for thumping him to be honest but there are other methods open to me.

I'm not going to publish his name due to the fact that he doesnt deal in here BUT I will say that those in Clacton that have used Ace rider training and know of the East Essex Motorcycle Club and whos property this is on, they'll know how I mean.

Bubba, did this guy use company property to try and fit your tyre?

if he did the company will also be liable, he pays up or you talk to the company, their employee, their equipment. That should be enough to get the matter resolved. If on the other hand it was done in his garage with his equipment have a word with him (and his dad) to resolve the issue.
Good luck

If he's ex-plod, then he knows how should know better, and that the courts often apply the law more firmly, him using contacts will only make things worse for him...

Actually this was done to use "your local supplier". This guy is always going on about the virtues of the club and how we all should be there to help each other and crap like that, plus his son worked for ATS till recently, (He's joining the shirtlifters, sorry, the Navy). As for getting it done cheap, git was going to charge me a tenner per wheel!

Sorry mate, looks like a double whammy!

Not cheap and no good.

The guy's a shite by the sound of it :shooter:

My point is that if you use a legit business (ie. shopfront, VAT reg ...etc) to carry out the work for you you've got a good chance of getting them to do the decent thing if somat goes wrong. They'll have a reputation to protect and usually pay insurance to indemnify themselves.

STOP THE PRESS

Went out there today to collect the wheel and tyre. Looks like he actually went out and bought me a new tyre! Cant see any sign of damage and judging by the amount of lube on the tyre, he didnt fit it either! Time for a road test, gentle of course

Tis true Chunks, there is a knack to it, but they can be a doddle to do, esp the Mich and Good Year ones, cheaper ones took a bit of effort.

And I was only 12 stone then, bit heavier now

Now the earthmovers in the North Wales quarries were a different kettle of fish!! Feckin huge, never wanted to drop one of those tyres on me toes!!
