Petty minded Drivers

Going to work last night along the A61 Barnsley to Wakefield, motoring along fairly quickly when up ahead I see three cars, the tail end one was a green VW Golf, all cars were doing about 50mph as I came up to overtake the Golf the driver deliberately moved towards the middle of the road, as there was traffic coming the other way I could not overtake, so I thought I am not going to rise to the bait I will just bide my time so I settled back behind the Golf, as we approached a section of the road with continuous white line, the Golf moved over to the left slightly, as I moved to overtake again he moved back to the middle, as there was nothing coming towards me at this point I continued to overtake, as I passed him he wound his window and shouted something at me :dunno: and blared his horn for about three seconds, I just extended my left hand touched index finger to thumb and waved up and down a couple of times, as I was passing the second car now back to legal overtaking I looked in the mirror and saw the Golf right up the arse of the second car, where he thought he was going I don't know, anybody else experience pettiness like this, I must say though that most drivers I come across move over when they see a bike approaching.

i've noticed that the further north you go the more considerate car drivers seem to be. never had any problems in scotland, but down here count yourself lucky if they even know you are there. i think, as a general rule, car drivers attitude to bikes is getting worse, as we do have an image problem.
i try to make sure that when i am making progress i don't interfere with any other road users, and when i'm in more built up areas to ride considerately - i haven't got anytime for people who ride stupidly in urban surroundings. It's people who ride like prats that give, in this instance, the golf driver something to moan about. I'm sure you were riding safely, but unfortunately, bikes have got a serious image problem at the moment, and there are plenty of w*#kers around making it worse. :bandit:

bugger just re-read my response and it sounds like i'm having a go at derek - i'm not - was just a general rant about why the golf driver could have a pre-formed opinion on bikes.

sorry if any misunderstanding caused derek!

You are right Rods, I am not what you would call a speedy rider, but this is a nice safe stretch of road where you normally have plenty of room to overtake the traffic on a bike, I have witnessed morons on bikes heading into oncoming traffic to overtake cars and each other at excessive speeds not only putting themselves in danger but other motorists,
I am by no means a perfect motorist whether in the car on on the bike and I am as prone to making mistakes as anyone however should I make an error of judgement I will acknowledge the fact and hopefully learn from it.

From my original post it may appear that I was riding like a moron by overtaking where there is a single white line, however I did not cross the line but I was only inches from the Golf, and I was anticipating him moving across to try to force me to the other side of the road

Have to agree..

About Scotish drivers, particulary HGV drivers, they will mount the nearside kerb if they have to, even mowing down pedestrains to let you by, bloody brill.

As for upsetting car drivers, have you checked your headlight alignment?, if its up a wee bit high It and spotting their interior mirror, it could mistaken for flashing cars to let you past :dunno: , now that will piss them off.

derek your post didn't sound like you were riding poorly - it was my post which could have been misconstrewed (is that spelt right?).

Nothing wrong with lining an overtake up on a solid white line - particularly if it's on a road you know - that surely means you are PLANNING the overtake well in advance - something that so many riders don't seem to do. they just follow their mate on the r1!!

what hacks me off is not just the safety of the overtake - but when bikes make inconsiderate overtakes that shock other road users - ie race cans on the road overtaking at 130mph. seen it happen - it may not be unsafe in theory - but who knows what reaction an old dorris is going to have!!

Car driver

Strangely enough, I met the exact opposite to Derek today - a car driver who could actually drive. Out for a bimble along by the Horseshoe Pass and down along the Nant - y - Garth Pass. Great bit of road if you know where it is going - and this car driver knew it! Not pushing me but I knew I was holding him up. He was driving one of those Subaru Imprezza thingies. Out at the Ruthin end and I moved over to let him past, a flash of lights and a quick blat on the horn and he was gone! I only caught him up again because he got stuck behind a couple of cars. I wouldn't mind but I wasn't exactly admiring the scenery and was on my CBR1000! Respect to ya!

The trouble we get down here is grockles with caravans who don't know where they're going,so they stop in the middle of the road to look at a map!!:bang:

As for ignorant, bloody minded drivers,I've noticed it alot.Cars coming the other way when your filtering, swerving towards you with headlights on main beam is a favourite.

I'll have to admit at this point,to driving a BMW as well,so nobody likes me!:cry::cry:

I thought cars had/have got better in the last decade or 2, I have had very few instances of cars pulling over to the middle of the road as opposed to the late 70's/80's where it seemed to be a sport, I was younger and a lot less tolerant then as well. On the whole cars now move over and allow me to pass. just my take on things but then there are prats both in cars and bikes.

They usually move over round here.
But you always get the odd one who drives up the rear of the car in front in the "overtaking" position despite there being no overtaking opportunity... for miles and miles...

Isn't that the speed limit along the rural part of Barnsley/Wakefield road now Derek. So should you have been trying to overtake? :dunno:

Except that a lot of these numptys are doing less than the speed limit for the road and a lot of drivers are not aware of what the limit actually is on any specific road.

There generally pretty good up in scotland except the occational 4x4 taking the sprogs to school.
I did have a bit of a run in with a tw@t driving an AMG A class of all things, overtook on a straight with plenty visibilty and a broken centre line. for some reason he took offence and drove right up my chuff with his lights flashing, so i thought I'd test his brakes and mashed mine to the floor, his face was a picture. I kept going and again he started with the bumper baiting, so being the gentleman I am i indicated and pulled over. Wanker kept going so i pulled out behind him and kept a reasonable distance but our friend has bottled it by this point and starts pulling all sort of manouvers to get away iincluding overtaking on dodgy bends:h . kept catching up with him on the straights though. (don't you just love turbos)
I was laughing all the way to work. :}
