Motorcycling in mourning
Motorcycling is in mourning. Cruel illness has robbed us of
one of the greatest British motorcyclists of all time.
Anyone that knew Barry Sheene personally couldn't fail to
like the man. He was a true hero, but one who was always
generous with his time. He was witty, charismatic, a true
maverick. And half quick on a bike.
Even if you never had the pleasure of meeting him face-to-face,
you can't fail to have been touched by Sheene's awesome persona
and skill. He was unique. We'll never see his like again.
Sheene personified everything that's wonderful about bikes.
Individuality, glamour, freedom, excitement. He inspired many
to take up biking - myself included - and we're all eternally
grateful for that.
He lived life to the full. He seized every day with vigour and
sucked it dry of all it had. He was, is, and always will be a
genuine hero. Some people spend their lives as little more
than spectators, never getting the nerve to take the plunge
and follow their dreams. Sheene was not one of these. He threw
himself headlong into everything he did with a single-minded
determination to succeed. He's an inspiration.
There have been more than a few tears shed this week for Barry.
And there will be many more to come in the months ahead as this
wonderful man is missed by his friends, family and fans. But
when the wave of sorrow has subsided a little, spend some time
celebrating the life of this great man in whatever way you see
fit. It's what he would have wanted.
Godspeed, Barry.
