Fried ECU

on returning to my bird after the Xmas break I found it would not start. Extensive diagnostics on all the sensors indicated they were functioning correctly. no output was detected from the ECU so my mechanic has ststed the ECU requires replacement. So does this mean I must now pay HONDA for a blank which must be reprogrammed for the not inconideralbe cost of arround ?1000?
is there another way or have I been caught out by the biggest time bomb of them all?

There are actually a couple of other options.
1) Find a smashed one and buy the ECU, ignition barrell and keys

2) Look on the USA Ebay and buy an ECU and wiring loom from there ( they do not have HISS fitted from what I can gather.. )
