An in depth system clean up if your PC is grinding to a halt. :bang:

Just ran an extensive system search and found loads of fookin Adware stuff lurking everywhere that your normal virus/spybot cleaners cant get rid of.

Look on Symantics web site (Norton to you lot) and follow their instructions of how to get in to, and clean up your registry. Not for the feint hearted I must admit.

Now my PC's like a rocket once again.... Brill. :yo:

Been on to symantec's home page, can't find anything about cleaning your registry, where should I be looking?

WARNINGS!!!!!!!!

Dont be tempted to download any symantics software, its almost universally crap!!

There are few areas on a PC that you can play with with as much potential for completely screwing up the entire system as the registry, if you are the least bit concerned about your abilities, then stay the hell away from the registry!!!

For the amount of work it takes to do a full cleanout, I actually reccomend just to do a backup, and then rebuild the whole lot... much safer that a registry hack, and much more through

How do you qualify that statement - I thought they were one of the major players....

I used to use Norton complete with all the latest updates... right up to the time a virus went straight through my Symantech firewalls and damn near wrote of my entire home network (11 PCs)

I subsequently dumped norton, adopted AVG (which is actually free), which instantly identified the source of the virus infestation, and identified three other viruses that had been on my system for a number of months and Norton hadnt even Noticed!!!

Plus, Im not the only person who has been bitten by Norton, Im a member of a fairly large group of high end computer users, and its our concensus of opinion that Symantech is actually one of the worst protection packages you could entrust your computer to, especally since there are other cheaper and better options.

On the other hand you are welcome to go hack your registry, and use Norton/Symantech stuff, what Im saying is only the advice of a guy who has been using and building PCs since the 286 processor was the hottest toy on the market, and Im sure you will find loads of people who will swear by Norton (how else can Symantecgs popularity be explained!!).... myself, I only swear at it!

I tried AVG on my last computer and it picked up about 30 virus's that Norton missed, turns out these all came from Kazaa, so I binned Kazaa.

Must agree~~~~

Exactely the same here dude

AVG [for a freebie] is an excellent av stopper

use this in conjunction with Zone Alarm as a firewall

Then download ad-aware which [IMHO] is the best adware/spyware remover and you should be quiet safe

Messing with the registry is NOT for the faint hearted without backing up first

Mind you....PLEASE NOTE BUZZZZZ [Sorry ELLEN with 2 x L's] 99% of ad/spyware comes from +18 websites so we all now know where you've been surfing!!!

11 x PC's - Home Network

You must live in a bigger house than even Slobbo's got

What the hell do you do with 11 pc's on a home network? Refugees? or just hackers? LOL

All sorts of stuff, I used to do quite a bit of PC building and repair, so I got a load of stuff from that, I like to play with building high spec/high speed overclocked machines.. think of drag racing but with a PC.

Each of the kids has a PC in their own room, we have two laptops in the lounge, and a third laptop in the kitchen that the wife manages the shopping list on (and sends to Tescos for home delivery), plus the wife and I have a desktop each in the office... then there is my server machine that I use for a test bench when writing server based aplications, and its also my personal FTP server which gives me access to my network from anywhere in the world.... the rest are all projects which Ive built for technical reasons

strange that nobody mentions winpatrol, this has got to be the best piece of protection/maintainence software you can get

Symantic

I use AVG,AD-aware and Spybot on every PC I work on and occasionally if I need a remover for a specific virus I will download a fix from Symantic but generally the freebies do a bl**dy good job if you update them REGULARLY.

It's funny how peoples opinions differ. I guess you're gonna form an opinion on what works best for you based on your own experiences, which would be quite reasonable.

A little while ago I worked for a large (international) company who issued me with a new laptop. On receipt they told me to immediately uninstall the preinstalled McAfee anti-virus, as they had found it unreliable and inconsistant - contrary to, say, Clive's experience. They had me install Norton AV as they believed nothing came anywhere near it for all-round performance and updates and used nothing else across the whole company - contrary to, say, Phoenix's experience!

They can't both be right.... or can they? Paradoxically, they have both found the best one, or at least what works for them. I suppose the only way is to suck it and see. Both products must be successful just to survive in the market place. Yet both products are slated here :dunno:

Whenever there is a new virus warning doing the rounds, I have always found Symantec to have a removal tool for it. How can/do you improve on that :dunno:

I think if it works for you - it's the best one!
