The series currently running about assaults on police demonstrates an appalling sentencing regime.Glad to see the copper, who was being investigated for pinging one of the moped scum off, has finally been cleared.
Shame it took 2 years to come to a sensible decision and all but ruined his career in the police force.
Yes and no...oes anyone agree with me that police assaults should receive a mandatory jail term,
John, I have disagreed with your post not because I don't thing there are 'bad' plod out there - it would be naive to think otherwise- but because I don't think there can be exceptions when it is 'ok' to assault plod.Yes and no...
The problem is human nature...............
Every once in a while there is a plod that gets what they deserve
We have had two of them in this area. One was so bent he could not walk straight, and the other was just a downright bully..
Both eventually got the sack, but how they avoided a kicking is a mystery !

I was approached to see if I was interested in becoming a JP when I retired. I really wasn't sure about it so I spent a few days gaining 'work experience' - the main thing that put me off was the sentencing guidelines - I knew I would never be satisfied on a personal level so I didn't pursue it.Until the courts start handing down punishments appropriate to the crimes then things won't improve for those who serve on the front line to protect us from the slime of humanity.
Clearly there is something fundamentally wrong with the judiciary and until that is overhauled then the scum of the earth will continue to be given inappropriate "sentences".
The papers are full of news stories about career criminals being handed lenient sentences and given yet another chance to reform. But why should they when they have complete contempt for a system that barely gives them more than a slap on the hand.
I don't understand how these bewigged cretins can sleep at night after handing down such pathetic punishments. But then again crime rarely affects them in the way it does for the rest of society.
Perhaps the judiciary should be elected in the same way as local councillors That way they would be directly accountable to the people they claim to serve.
u are usually someone who I rate as worth listening too.. But sorry, that is UTTER crap.John, I have disagreed with your post not because I don't thing there are 'bad' plod out there - it would be naive to think otherwise- but because I don't think there can be exceptions when it is 'ok' to assault plod.
It would be interesting to hear what @Judge Dredd has to sayI was approached to see if I was interested in becoming a JP when I retired. A huge amount of court work passes through JPs, while I admire the majority of them for doing a thankless unpaid voluntary job they are bottom of the food chain in the court system. I have known quite a few over the years but two stand out -'one was a total prat who lived next door to my mother in law and one is a lady I used to work with - she does it for the status she believes it brings, exactly the same as when she was at work - trust her as far as I can throw her. The fact that they serve as JPs doesn't rest well with me.
There are good and bad in all walks of life
Most folk are good or at least benign
There are some that go though life thinking they are special.. And those people when placed in any position of power are extremely dangerous
It might not be 'right' to get fighting ( with any one let alone a copper ) but there are occasions when it is righteous
Maybe that is a difference between us - I don't think that swinging fists has or will ever solve anything!I think you have hit the nail square on the head there John
Some people given a little authority take it to the extreme, demanding this or that whether its lawful or not. Now while I don't think anyone should be assaulted for doing their job no matter what it is I have no problem with those that deserve it getting a bloody good belt
As for coppers I believe the majority join for the best of reasons but its only the strongest willed ones that stay true to their ideals & don't get pulled into the look after our own attitude that pervades the police in this country, these don't tend to get promoted !
Yes I have experienced that attitude for myself & can name a few coppers that well deserve a bloody good kicking not for being coppers per se but for breaking the law they are paid to uphold on a daily basis........... and before anyone jumps on the bandwagon yes I can prove those claims without doubt !
Well put, TC. Faced with the kind of slime that many coppers face on a daily basis, it amazes me how many do perform their job with restraint.Speaking from experience of having had to work with bent/untrustworthy/bully coppers until they were caught and removed, I know how tempting it can sometimes be to stick one on some of them, which from my perspective would have been a case of lumping a colleague.
However, 99% of the public have no idea whether a copper is honest and straight or whether they are an undesirable (and lets face it, bad apples slip through the net and can be found in every barrel).
So to this end, like or loathe the individual I take any assault on Police as an assault againt the uniform and the authority that uniform represents and therefor that authority is undermined when the sentencing rules justify a probation order or community service.
What many others fail to remember is that like the armed forces (who I also have the utmost respect for) it is easy to forget how many officers have been killed in the line of duty (and I have first hand experience of this) but as I emntioned in a revious thread the powers that be often think of those losses as being justified as after all the protection of life is the primary function of every Police officer.
Now THAT I can fully agree withBent coppers there are.... but there are far more good ones and they deserve far better support than they currently get from the judiciary, their own headshed and the Government.
I’m one who considers that assault on a police officer (like in USA ) should be a significant mandatory prison sentence - I’m thinking in terms of years not weeks.
When I was a kid, many moons ago, we were terrified of the local bobby on the street, we could get a good wallop or even worse he’d escort you home to see both your parents and you’d get another wallop. But I suppose these days there’s far too many that only have one to go home to
