Another old chestnut (luggage) !

Sorry guys, had a search thu previous threads cos I'm sure there was summit about this, but can't find it so here goes !

Me and the missus hope to have nearly 3 weeks touring in the UK (around the Peak District and the the Isle of Man) on the bike.

For the last 2 years we've managed to get away we've used a tail pack bungeed to the rentec rack and a tank bag.

However I'm thinking of taking off the Rentec rack (dont really use it normally anyway) and fitting a 'proper' rack with a quick release hard top box. Don't want panniers, we usually get everything into the tail bag anyway, but what would you lot recommend.

I only intend to have it fitted for these 3 weeks cos I think it will spoil the bike for everyday use, but getting rally pissed off with the bungees and trying to balance the tail pack onto the Rentec, so thought I'd see if this was worth it.

Waddya think ??

Wot's rong wiv a dustbin bag, us suvvern poofta's use e'm all the time, Seriously i use a Givi top box occasionlly and have a Givi rack fitted all the time, doesn't look to bad without the box and does come in handy at times, when i bought the bird it had a full set of Givi on but even taking the boxes off it still looked like it had just fell out of a Meccano set, very handy in the rain though and also good for security.

Yes, same as Firebird, Givi topbox on a wing rack. Looks reasonable (personal opinion) without the box and loads of space when clipped on (E460 model - takes two OGK Aeroblade helmets and two set of oversuits)
Currently using soft panniers for longer hauls, but seriously looking at getting the full Givi set - fully waterproof and secure when you stop for coffee/pee etc.

Givi's~~??

Not got them got them fitted to the BIRD [sold them second hand]
but had them for over 10 years on my old CBR1000

Monokey cases are superb - juct click and take a "suitcase" into your hotel - NEVER leaked water in despite riding through torrential storms in France

Although Rolfy has done the "150" complete with pillion and luggage the manufacturers leaflets warn you about stability at "high speeds"

I often found [on my CBR] that the increased width caught me out - with one or two wing mirrors missing from various cages!!!!

Adds significantly to the weight - but doesn't appear to affect the cornering stability!

Just a word of caution though.........................
extra weight and a pillion on the back - don't be too enthusiastic with the right hand - the front wheel might just pop up a little too far!!!!!

Cheers guys, looks like the bin bags are gonna get consigned to the, er, bin.

Thanks for the info, as usual !!

MORE LUGGEAGE THAN YOUCAN SHAKE A STICK AT !

Hi I have the FULL Givi luggage system with a 52 litre maxia top box and 41 litre side panniers
Coupled to that a Baglux tank Harness and Omega bag (25 + 12 litres)
Needless to say I can carry enough kit for a long trip away
However it can be a bit heavy going and your arms feel a bit tired on the twisties...So if you're not too strong...... it is not advised, AND don't let the bike drop !

It may look a bit 'ugly' in some peoples view BUT I can carry a LOT of luggage and keep it safe and dry

If I was going to do the hard luggage option I think this would be the smartest option. EXHAUSTS, I believe you have non standard exhausts also, so it would be a gamble on fit unless you got a trial fitting.

:dunno:

Yeah

The Quills actually fit in the same position of the OEM's but the only thing I'd have to check would be the bracket holding them to the footpeg bracket.

Apparantly they have a new distributer for Corbin bits who gets the part Air Freighted instead of Sea Freight (which is why there has always been such ridiculas delays in orders) so they rekon on a 3 week delivery, watch this space !!

How much would a set of Givi's, (Or equivilant), be in comparison to the beetle bags there?? Only asking cos I loikes the corbin ones and with the amount of travelling I do, (Very little), the corbins woud suit me down to the ground

Bubba..

I'm just waiting for the guy to get back to me today with the cost of the Corbins, so as soon as I hear I'll post it on here. Looking at a coupld of catalogues for Givi panniers, looks like they cost around ?300 plus the cost of the Wingrack, so it will be interesting to see if the Corbins are anywhere near.

Will let ya know.....

Russ, for what it's worth...........................................

I borrowed some soft luggage for various trips last year including Spain; a pair of Oxford sport panniers which I just threw over the back seat and strap down & an Oxford tank bag. I was so impressed that I'm on the look out for a set @ Ally Pally this year, but might go for the tail pack instead of the tank bag (an account of my belly :h )

OOPS !

Well, I got the price for a set of Beetle Bags today ......and....... well.............. BLEEDING HELL !!!

They cost a whopping ?620 for the set !!

That just for panniers with a capacity of 46 litres (in a Blackbird colour) so compared to the Givi set (rack, panniers and top box) with a storage capacity of 117 liters for ?470.

Now I like the Corbin bags a lot, think they look real good, but sorry, aint gonna pay that !

Joe, I've been using soft luggage for years too, just don't get on with it, get fed up with bungeeing everything on every day, just a personal thing I suppose.

Right, where's me cheque book !

Know what you mean Russ. If I was gonna do loads of touring

I'd get some hard luggage, but as I only do 1 or 2 trips abroad a year I'll stick with the soft stuff.

russ............

definately Hard Luggage!!!! Don't give Corbin your money!

I hate soft luggage.............saw a funny/not so funny thing on a return trip from Belgium last year. A bike....can't remember what it was.....sports of some sort.......had to stop as his luggage had caught fire........and I mean fire!! The exhaust had been touching just that little bit too long and I would say he lost all of his gear.

Maybe it was a Fireblade.................droll:rolleyes:

Yet if youy go the the US website the beetle bags are only, (Thats a laff!!), $699, or ?407. Thats one HELL of a markup!!

yeah

I noticed that as well, after I just wrote to him to say I wasn't interested cos of the cost, he said he could offer 10% off if I passed the details on to anyone else who wanted them !!!

Sort of expensive advertising !!

I think I'll stick to Givi.............
