They seem to have their figures wrong Wolfie, I am sure you are entitled to a percentage of your annual wage X years served I may be wrong and I am open for correction but Our lass used to earn between 8 and 10 grand per annum, she worked for 7 years, she came out with 6 grand when they finished her.

What are the payments?

The amount of your lump-sum redundancy payment depends on:

how long you have been continuously employed by your employer;
how your years of continuous service relate to a particular age band; and
your weekly pay, up to a legal limit.
For each complete year of continuous service between the ages of 18 and 21, you will receive half a week's pay.

For each complete year of continuous service between the ages of 22 and 40, you will receive one week's pay.

For each complete year of continuous service between the ages of 41 and 65 you will receive 1? weeks' pay. However, if you are over 64, the total amount of the payment you receive will be reduced.

To help you work out your payment, you can use the Ready reckoner for calculating the number of week's pay due.

not fantasy land luv but is there anyway you can get a bit of money together, backer, family etc to go it alone on a small basis. we started with an old coal office/collection point, building about 100 yrs old. shit tip. coal dust filthy. not much money to start so got bank loan. after 2 years that coal has turned to gold through hard work and determination. you know all of firms contacts after 18 yrs. we thought it couldnt be done proved the bastids wrong.

Be careful about voluntary redundancy, it could be construde that you made yourself jobless and any benefits you are entitled to could be stopped.

Ask your employer what criteria he used to choose you for redundancy and if anyone else is at risk. Ask about retraining or other positions and get it ALL IN WRITING. If your employer fails to follow the correct procedure than you could have a case of unfair dismissal. My last company made a right balls up and I walked away with ???????????????????????????'s.

Just keep cool and take notes.

Wolfman I hope you're right saying that your employer wants to keep you because that pay-off is shite.
If you have an option to stay you'd be better off taking it with an eye to the future. Stay where you are if you can and retrain with a view and a plan to move on. You're an intelligent bloke so draw on your resources and get a plan together.
I hope you survive the redundancies but treat the experience as a wake-up call - the writing is on the wall.
Good luck mucker.

Been self employed for 16 years now. Best thing I ever did. I don't know what your business is, I'm a Land Surveyor and through my contacts I've done OK. It hasn't been easy but as my old boss once said about being self employed... You work the same hours for double the money or half the hours for the same money.

Foxy,

bit late as I aint been online for a few days, but, ask your present employer that if you take a new position within the restructured company and for some reason you don't like it you would be able to take your redundancy package. Usually if your offered a position following a shake up the company will offer a 13 week period of if they like you or if you like them in the new job. If they go with this it wil give you some time to find other employment and if within the 13 weeks you will get your redundancy payoff. On the other hand you might like what is offered and stay with them.

good luck mate
