Make an almost inaudible high pitched whining noise (not like the ones Bert makes) my computer is switched on all the time but every now and then I am aware of said noise, thinking about it though the computers at work make a similar noise as well.

Tis your hard drive.. It is spinning at either 5400 RPM or if it is a quick one 7200 !

Be the cooling fan for the processor, :dunno: had one whining like a banshee last year, easy enough to change..

Could be the bearings in the fan in the PSU. Still easy to change. Open up the case when its happening and stop the CPU fan for a VERY short time. If ther noise stops, replace it. If it doesn't, replace the PSU.

Could be a capacitor about to die (if it's a high-pitched wiiiiiieeeee sound). Check to see if it's doing any odd things, and if so, consider replacing it.

(oddly enough, the same works for mail-order brides...)

kinda

mines not a high pitched one, but now and again, when i switch it on, its a low annoying one. I have to reboot it and it does subside, although it does have a million other things wrong with it. (im gonna have to invest in brand spanking new one :bang: :bang: as im gonna chuck this one very far.....) :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:
