Beware P & O Ferries

:bang: Just been on the internet trying to book a crossing with P & O from Portsmouth to Bilbao using the special offer supplied in their advert in BIKE magazine.

The ad states that you can have 30% discount if you book over the phone or online quoting the code 61418.

Whilst trying to book online for the dates 10th July to 15th July, the system would not accept the code which kept coming back as invalid and therefore quoting the price of ?360  which I thought was a bit hefty for a bike.

I decided to phone them instead so that I could get them to input the code. I gave exactly the same requirements etc.. and then gave them the discount code. Imagine my suprise when the price quoted had gone up by ?9 including the 30% discount !!

I queried it with the lady at their call centre and explained that I had tried to do the booking online and it had been cheaper without the discount applied (?360 instead of ?369).

She seemed a little shocked and went to speak to a 'supervisor'. Upon returning, she had been given the dubious reason that my telephone quotation was a 'special' rate which actually worked out better than the ?30% discount !! By her tonality, she seemed a little embarassed at having to give me such feeble reasoning. I thanked her for her help and told her that I'd book it online instead.

It looks as though I'll have to book the ?360 crossing which I'm not too concerned about but I'm a little peeved that the discounted offer actually lead to the price being higher than standard. How many people have paid over the odds thinking that they're actually getting a discount ?

:shooter:

Has anyone else had any experiences like this ?
Does anyone know a better option to use for taking the bike abroad (I need to get to Asturias, Northern Spain) ? Plymouth to Santander (Brittany Ferries) is full around these dates.

Cheers

It might be worth popping the info to trading standards peeps.

Certainly shud let bike know about it.

Sounds like an old dodge used in some shops/chains where they suddenly raise the price of something for a few days to 30% above what it's been and then start a "sale" at 30% discount. It's just used to stimulate sales when things are a bit slow.

If the online price without any discount code is what you have to pay then bike aren't actually achieving anything with their discount offer - not bike's fault just being bamboozled by P&O.

The ?9 is proly just the usual "extra" charge these days for a 'phone booking rather than internet.

Make a quick call to Trading Standards - they are very helpful... I now no longer use P&O ferries, I now use Brittany for Channel crossing from Portsmouth to France...

I had a similar experience trying to book Hull to Zeebrugge for 2 bikes and 4 people for August.
The web page wouldn't take the Ride or the MCN discount codes.
Phoned them up and was told that the discounts applied to their brochure prices and that the web prices were already discounted.

After much discussion I was given a price of ?221 per bike which was about ?10 cheaper than the web price at the time.

Maybe I should make the effort to go to a travel agent and get a brochure just to check it

I do think the ads are a bit misleading :t

I think the "law" regarding sales is that is must have cost the quoted pre-discount price at one other store within the last 30 days. It's a load of crap really!

Ferry Crossing

P & Oh NO!

I use SPEED FERRIES from Dover to Boulogne (?19 for 2 and the bike one - way) and Brittany back from St. Malo to Pompey (?78 for 2 and the bike one - way). Book 'em both on line without hassle. Tell 'em the code they e-mail you at checking in and your'e off.
