Is it a design feature or just coincidence that there is a formula to work out what gear you are in from the speed and revs?
I've known it for years but only today thought I'd make a comment about it.
So, for those of you that never realised . . . in 2nd gear the speed and the revs match and for every gear higher the difference is 1000 revs. In 2nd gear at 40mph the revs will be at 4000, 50mph will be 5000.
In 3rd gear 50mph will be at 4000revs. A difference of 1000 revs for 1 gear higher.
In 4th gear at 50mph at 3000revs. A difference of 2000 revs for 2 gears higher.
See? Crystal!
It just about works for all gears at all speeds!
So, design or coincidence?
